영어에는 경어가 따로 없지만 공손한 표현은 분명 있다. 공손한 표현의 필요성을 알려주고, 어떤 상황에서 어떤 대상에게 공손하게 질문을 하는지도 함께 지도해보자.


 


공손한 표현만 너무 강조하면 아이들이 can을 사용한 질문이 잘못된 것인 줄 알고 사용하기를 꺼려하게 될 수도 있다. 친한 사이인 경우, can을 사용한 표현이 틀린 것이 아님을 알려주어 거부감을 없애줄 필요가 있다.


 


아이들이 일상생활에서 자연스럽게 익힐 수 있도록 평소에 아이들에게 could you ~? would you mind ~? 등의 표현으로 polite하게 질문한다. 어른이라고 아이들에게 polite하게 질문하지 말란 법은 없다.


 


Role play와 같은 activity를 통해 공손한 표현을 썼을 때와 그렇지 않았을 때 듣는 이의 기분이 어떻게 다른지 아이들이 직접 경험할 수 있도록 하는 것도 좋은 방법이다.
